I (Andy) have just come back from a breezy walk over to the lake and in conversation with another user of the park have gleaned some information regarding the swans. Apparently the male swan has recently died, after being observed by various people to be looking unwell, the rangers were contacted and on their advice Swan Lifeline were called to assess the situation, they agreed that the male swan was looking very ill and the situation should be monitored. Unfortunately a couple of days later the male was found dead and was subsequently taken away by Swan Lifeline for an autopsy. As I am sure everyone knows swans pair up for life and therefore we can only hope that the female who has three surviving cygnets can find another partner.

On a brighter note the Egyptian Geese are doing well on their third attempt at a brood this season. Fingers crossed they all survive.

There were approximately 65 Canada Geese cruising the lake this afternoon, which is the most I have ever seen there.

I think we should try and find out what the male swan died of. I will check with the rangers on Monday if I don't bump into one of them before. Do we know how recent this was?

I was chatting Jodie and she told me that the blue-green algae concerns about the lake may be unfounded. I have recently been using Black Park during the recent hot weather, just in case. I wonder if the death of the swan is related to the condition of the water in the lake?
