During the volunteer day on Sunday 20th, clearing overgrown vegetation from around the Pond in the Arboretum, I noticed that from just a couple of dragonflies around at the beginning of our clearance, there suddenly became 20 or 30 of them darting about. On observing them for a few moments it became apparent that they were after the hoards of insects we were disturbing as we cut back the vegetation. They were definitely taking advantage of the situation.
I found it completely fascinating to watch their antics, quite voracious insects but very beautiful some as blue as kingfishers in colour and they have a fantastic flight they way they swoop and swerve and hover on the wing, brilliant !
Does anyone else have any observations about any other wildlife behaviour they may have witnessed whilst in the park ?
My favourite creature at the moment is Russell the white winged crow who hangs around the car park scrounging food. At first I thought it was a magpie when i saw him fly up to a tree but on closer inspection I now know he is a crow, hence his nickname. Does anyone else know how long he has been hopping around without a ticket
hey, guess what, Russell is not a lone crow. Today I saw two crows together by the walk through from the car park and both had white patches on their wings! Must be a family thing! Has anybody else seen these birds? I wonder if they are this years' youngsters?
