While strolling through Langley Park at the weekend in the glorious sunshine, we somehow ended up having a conversation about the phrase 'screaming blue murder'!
We couldn't understand why 'blue' murder? Why not any other colour? I stood in the park and yelled "blue murder" but no-one came to my assistance. (There may be fewer park users though!)
Do any one of you geniuses know where it comes from and its original meaning?
This is really boring stuff! Screaming Blue Murder is not necessarily indicative of alarm or fear. It probably derives from an old (now obsolete) French curse "Morbleu" from "Mort Bleu", literally Blue Death. However the word "Bleu" was often substituted for "God" as in "Sacre Bleu", literally "Sacred Blue" but when used means "God Damn". Even in English "blue" is sometimes added to a word to strengthen it as in "Blue Blazes" I think the previous answer with Captain Scarlet, in the broom cupboard with Mrs. Peacock, is much more interesting!
